September Color Workshop:

Exploring the three-color palettes led to several important clarifications and a major change in the curriculum for the future color workshops:

Three Color Limited Palette

Three Color Warm Palette

Three Color Palette - Cool

Three Color Palette - Cool

After creating the color charts for each of the three color palettes it became clear that the warm palette was lacking in the variety of purples produced and the cool palette lacked an acceptable range of oranges.  Both produced greens that might be acceptable, but also specific to season and/or location when painting landscape.

When the two palettes were combined, the six pigment palette provided a wonderful range of both primary and secondary colors as well as beautiful neutrals.

The discussion following the demonstration of painting the apple and the lemon made me aware that the focus of future workshops will be on only color, value of color, and choosing a palette that suits the artist’s specific needs.  To include the other elements of art: line, shape and texture, will divert attention away from the study of color.

The satisfaction that comes from mixing beautiful, clean colors is well worth the time and effort.  The satisfaction of seeing cleaner colors on the canvas is the ultimate reward.
