Orbs No. 20 – Watercolor – 12″ x 18″

I’m looking forward to spending time with new students and traveling a bit with former students who will be sharing some of their favorite en plein air painting spots with me.  I’ll do my best to post a few of our color adventures while I’m away.

Since teaching the last workshop at N.A.W.A. I have had several personal breakthroughs with color, experimenting with more neutralized primaries and discovering gorgeous palettes.  I also attended a fabulous workshop with Don Andrews.  Again, I experienced several important breakthroughs regarding maintaining strong color when working with color value.  I’ll be sharing these breakthroughs at the upcoming workshops in New York City.

I’m headed back to California in April to paint the hills I have fallen in love with and to teach two workshops in Santa Rosa.

On Thursday and Friday, April 25-26, I’m teaching the Color Scheme Game/Color Value Workshop at Village Art Supply.  On Saturday and Sunday, April 27 & 28, I’m teaching the Watercolor Techniques and Abstract Design Workshop at Rileystreet Art Supply.

You can register online on my website.  Classes are limited.  Don’t hesitate to put your name on the wait list if the class is full.

Tom’s bow ties are too hysterical for me to stop at only one painting.  This second study is an example of painting by color value.  I’ll be teaching a Color Value Workshop in Santa Rosa, CA at the end of January and another at the Center for Contemporary Art in Bedminster, NJ in the spring.  One may also be scheduled in Salisbury, MD in the next few months.

Comparing the grayscale values

The image on the right shows the painting before adding another wash of violet to darken the shadows.

Grayscale mode of photograph

For variety, I lightened the value of the tie on the right.  Notice that the shadows are much darker than the bow ties.  When I mixed the violet for the shadows, I used too much water and the result was a wash that dried much too light.  I painted the rest of the painting before adjusting thew shadow value.  Had I painted using oil paints, the value of the mixed violet would not have lightened unless I added white.  The Color Value Workshop may be presented in either watercolor or oil.

Comparison in full color

Getting the values right is more important than getting the colors (hues) right!

Sketchbook drawings, color value studies: Family Treasures No. 46, Tom’s Bow Ties.  Drawn first with Sheaffer, snorkel, white dot fountain pen filled with Noodler’s Heart of Darkness Ink, followed by watercolor washes.

This weekend I revised The Color Scheme Game to include two, extremely useful, color schemes.

Trumpet Parts No. 88

The new color schemes and the number they relate to on the dice are now listed on The Color Scheme Game page.  New cards have been printed and are available on Etsy.  Workshop palettes are in transit, color wheel templates are completed and brushes are on order.  Everything is ready for stress-free, fun workshops to begin.  Please contact me if you are interested in hosting either a demonstration, workshop or an Art Party.

Another Beautiful Snowstorm

The February Workshop that was scheduled for tomorrow is canceled.  So as not to cause chaos with anyone’s schedule, I am also canceling the March Workshop.  I should have learned my lesson years ago when I had to constantly reschedule classes due to winter weather conditions.  From now on I will run workshops following the wisdom of Farmers’ Markets and Flea Markets, holding classes April through October, skipping the risky weather of November through March.

It’s fun to look back at old paintings with fresh eyes.

The details for the January 16th & 17th color workshop are now posted on the “Color Workshop and Info” page. Celebrate the New Year by treating yourself to a weekend of playing with paint!

Happy Holidays!
